YEAR 3 VISUAL COMMUNICATION:
GRAPHIC DESIGN WORKSHOP
Highlands, North Carolina

The Year 3 Visual Communication: Graphic Design Workshop was held on March 3-7, 2024. Emerge fellows traveled to Highlands, North Carolina to stay at the Western Carolina University's Highlands Biological Station (HBS) where they spent three full days and four nights. Days were spent learning with Inkscape to design scientific posters and graphics, learning about the work being conducted on the Ela Dam (with Cherokee Biologist, Caleb Hickman), spending time hiking Whiteside Mountain (with HBS Associate Director, Jason Love), and going on a night hike to look for local salamanders (with an Emerge fellow who was a member of a lab conducting salamander research at HBS).

Emerge funded 3 undergraduate students, 9 graduate students, and 1 early career professional (total: 13) to participate. This workshop was co-led by Co-PI Dan McGarvey with support from Co-PI Amanda Rugenski and Breanna Ondich (Emerge Program Coordinator).
